There is always a reason behind our choices and especially the products that we use every day. But for IKLM founders choosing an eco-friendly product to use was the farthest thing from their minds.
Like a lot of us, Lucky and Moon were happy going to Starbucks and walking out with that prestigious logo cup and bag. They never considered what it was made of. Because most of their take-out places had similar containers. What made them even happier was when they didn’t have to go out to get the food at all. They just kept working, called, and had it delivered to their door. The convenience of fast food take-out and home delivery had become an integral part of their new business lifestyle. But they were soon to find out the cost of that convenience.
Their cost of convenience came in the form of a health scare for one of the founder’s family members. They were given information about how the sicknesses had occurred. From this information, they understood that they needed to become more health-conscious.
They started with changing their eating habits and adding more vegetables. But later, after finding more research, they found out that the problem wasn’t in the food they were eating but in the containers and cups that the food came in. All that convenience had really cost them.
The owners now understood that the food containers that they had loved receiving, had chemicals in them. And more than that, the toxic chemicals in them were making their family sick. They decided to make a conscious effort to avoid plastic and to find alternatives to toxic plastic, especially for food storage containers. From this commitment, the idea of an eco-friendly product for IKLM was formed.
Lucky’s first thoughts were, “what is so bad about plastic takeout food containers”? “Don’t even hospitals still use them?” She then found out what a scientist at an environmental research center in Oregon had to say about plastic containers. First, that ” they contained many chemicals including BPA, Phthalates, and PFAS.” This study went on to reveal that, ” these chemicals are leaching into our food and water and ending up in our bodies.” In another study, she found out that we take into our bodies about a credit card size of plastic every year. She now understood what was really in those containers. These studies made her even more committed to finding an alternative to plastic food storage.
Lucky, had heard of another substance out there that looked like plastic, but wasn’t and even had run into it from time to time. But she never understood how it was different or better than plastic. Now, she set out to investigate.
From her studies, she found out that environmentally, silicone is considered to be an eco-friendly substance that can be substituted for plastics. She read that silicones have plastic-like properties: flexibility, malleability, clarity, temperature resistance, and water resistance. Also, like plastic, it can be shaped or formed and softened or hardened into practically anything. After a more in-depth study, she chose silicone for her home.
But one of the best things she found out was that silicone products were easy to clean, nonstick, and stain-resistant. They were also popular for food storage, cookware, and kitchen utensils. Many experts on the subject wrote that they considered silicones to be nontoxic and safe for contact with food and drinks. That was what she was looking for. But further research sealed the deal. She found a strong statement by Health Canada to be reassuring, Health Canada stated that “There are no known health hazards associated with the use of silicone cookware. Silicone rubber does not react with food or beverages or produce any hazardous fumes.”
So, with this information, Lucky and Moon started their journey to find at least one product they could use in their own kitchen that would set them on their eco-friendly journey. The choice for IKLM was the sustainability of food storage by using silicone bags.

What I found out
